WLW via FOX News Radio recently asked Dr. Alex del Carmen to come on the air in Cincinnati, OH to discuss the recent shooting at Michigan State University. Dr. Del Carmen is a criminologist and professor at Tarleton State University and shared his insight into the causes of this tragedy.
Dr. Del Carmen noted that this shooting is a result of a ‘perfect storm’ of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, an economic shift, a sense of insecurity in the country, and mental illness. He also highlighted the defunding of police departments as a factor in the increasing vulnerability of soft targets, like schools.
When asked about the role of guns in shootings, Dr. Del Carmen said that access to guns is not the issue, but rather a combination of other factors that lead to these tragedies. He also shared his experience training 25,000 police officers in 25 years and noted that 99.9% of police officers are honest and hardworking individuals.
Finally, Dr. Del Carmen emphasized the importance of parents taking an active role in their children’s school safety by asking school board members and administrators what they are doing to make their schools safe.
